What is a tile mural?
Tile murals are defined as decorative artworks or images produced by assembling a large number of smaller tiles to create a more expansive, cohesive design when they are arranged in a certain order.
These artistic murals may be handcrafted but more popularly printed onto porcelain or ceramic tiles, and are deployed in an extensive array for interior and exterior applications. These include transforming shower surrounds, decorative feature walls in kitchens and dining areas in commercial restaurants and residential settings, but also around swimming pools and on outdoor seating spaces such as patios.
How are tile murals made?
Modern ceramic tile murals are constructed by first applying a design to smaller individual tiles before assembling them into one unified image. The professional process involves printing desired designs on to glazed tiles. The tiles are then kiln-fired so the designs become a permanent element of the tiles. After the initial firing, additional layers of glaze are sometimes applied before the final firing takes place. A plan is made of the complete image and the area where it will be installed. The surface is primed and smoothed, so it is ready to take the mural tiles. Individual tiles can then be affixed to the design location using mortar. Once in place, the tiles are grouted to produce a seamless mural.
Can you use any colour on a tile mural?
