Moroccan tile trends 2025: warmer colours take centre stage

Morocco has a long history of ceramic tile design. The region’s artistic traditions continue to attract designers looking to give a new and vibrant look to homes and public spaces.

Aesthetic trends do change, however – and 2025 has seen some interesting shifts in taste among designers opting for a Moroccan look.

Zellige tiles have long been a central feature of North African art and design. Known for their pleasing imperfections, these enduringly popular tiles are today preferred with a matte finish. The gentle, rustic beauty of these tiles can be enjoyed without the sometimes-overpowering visual dominance associated with the more traditional glossy zellige.

While pale whites and blues were once common, many designers and their clients are opting for richer and warmer colours. The growing preference for biophilic (nature-inspired) design has led to a greater use of the natural tones and textures found in the Moroccan landscape. Clay, ochre, terracotta and sandy hues are becoming prominent. These colours have the advantage of blending well with other natural materials used in interior designs, especially wood and stone.

Large format zellige and encaustic tiles are growing in popularity for larger, more open areas such as foyers, patios and restaurants. The traditional 4 x 4-inch square tiles are often replaced by 8 x 8-inch or 12 x 12-inch tiles, which reduces the grout lines and creates a feeling of spaciousness.
