Louisville art installation tells a story to local children

The Clifton neighbourhood in Louisville, Kentucky, boasts a new multi-sensory mural, commissioned by Louisville Visual Arts.

Located a short walk from two of the area’s best-known institutions, the Kentucky School for the Blind and the American Printing House for the Blind, the mural expresses the story of Clifton through sight, sound and touch.

Over 4,000 raised, hand-made, custom ceramic tiles adorn the curved, 58-foot wall. Lead artist Liz Richter, ceramicist Kristen Falkirk, and disability inclusion specialist Darren Harbour have endeavoured to create an artistic experience that can be enjoyed by all. The creators of the mural have ensured that it provides a stimulating and engaging tactile experience that can be enjoyed by visitors with sight impairment. There is an audio description of the mural available, and an interactive website that introduces the project and its development to a wider audience.
