Ceramic sign brings Mediterranean touch to New South Wales

A touch of Amalfi in an Australian setting: this might be an apt way to describe Sheree Commerford’s reworking of an old tavern on Australia’s Pacific coast.

Yamba is a small coastal resort town in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. Fashion designer Sheree Commerford, who spent many happy childhood days in the region, purchased and renovated an old seaside tavern in Yamba, remodelling it as a self-check-in hotel: “Il Delfino”.

Built in 1948, the inn is one of the last remaining original buildings on the Yamba coast. Many of the features of her renovation are designed to recall the simple hotels and boarding houses of Italian resorts she visited as a child.

A prominent feature of the renovation is the use of ceramic signage throughout the property, contributing significantly to the pervasive Mediterranean ambience. These signs include the main “Il Delfino” sign, individual room signs, and wayfinding signs, directing residents around the site. The custom ceramic signage was designed and produced by Elise Eales of di Lunedi Studio. Other ceramic elements in the building, such as light pendants, stools and mugs, were designed by ceramicist Lisa Lapointe.

Well designed, custom ceramic signage can have a powerful impact on an interior design project.
