When purchasing ceramic or porcelain tiles, you need to be sure you have the tile best suited to your project and design concept.
For this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week at the end of May, architect Simon Astridge created an installation titled “Automatica”, for which he designed three vending machines clad in porcelain tiles. Rather than containing sandwiches, drinks or chocolate bars, they were filled with a range of sample porcelain tiles for visitors to the event to take out, look at and handle.
Produced for the ceramics brand Solus and the Italian tile manufacturer Italgraniti, the machines dispensed tile samples that could be accessed by popping free tokens into the machine and making a selection. The tokens were available from the Solus showroom, but the machines were located in different spots around Clerkenwell, such as Farringdon Station, The Priory Church of St Bartholomew the Great and Clerkenwell Green.
The porcelain tiles covering the machines were produced by Italgraniti’s Emilia Romagna factory. Commercial sales director Gabriele Massetti, explained the intentions behind the project:
“Automatica offers a playful but purposeful way to connect with the design community,” he said. Potential buyers could engage directly with the tiles, in a unique and innovative way.”
