Large-scale ceramic installation adorns Dubai hotel

The main entrance of Dubai’s Jumeirah Marsah al Arab Hotel features a striking new installation, created with state-of-the-art tile printing technologies.

Designed and created by Rotterdam-based Studio RAP, Blue Voyage is inspired by the luminous waters of the Arabian Gulf.

The strapline on RAP’s website succinctly conveys the company’s mission to design bespoke ceramics for expressive architecture. The Blue Voyage artwork attempts to depict perpetual motion and mutability, founded upon a substratum of stillness and stability. The motion of the waters of the gulf, ever moving and mutating as they catch and reflect the light of the Arabian sun, is represented by two walls of 3D printed custom ceramic tiles. The walls, each 6m tall and 9m wide, are designed in curved, wave-like forms with the goal of creating a liquid sense of movement. The detailed tiles are textured to appear to change under different lighting conditions. According to the designers, these changes produce a sense of motion in stillness so characteristic of the sea.

Blue Voyage aims to demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of digital ceramic tiles in a hospitality environment, taking advantage of the possibilities afforded by recent technological advances in ceramic tile printing.
