Ceramic artist Frances Priest contributes to Welsh theatre refurbishment

Edinburgh-based ceramic artist Frances Priest has completed a large-scale tile commission for a leading Welsh theatre.

Theatr Clwyd in Mold has been undergoing a revamp over the last year, and Priest has contributed a tile installation, “Steller”, which has brought her distinct sense of colour and shape to the restaurant and bar area. The project was created in conjunction with Craven Dunnill Blackfield.

Priest took inspiration from the existing brick and tile work in the building, which dates from the 1970s. The installation covers an area of 18m square, and comprises over 1800 unique cast motif tiles. Priest’s work aims to create a sense of dynamism and motion, perhaps inspired by the dance and movement seen on the theatre stage.

As a child, Priest was given a book, published in 1856: The Grammar of Ornament, by Owen Jones. This book, which explores ornament and pattern in objects then held in the British Museum, continues to influence Priest’s work, which frequently takes inspiration from historical motifs and patterns from around the world.
