An Indian company is using recycled mosaic tiles within its projects, including use in residential projects.
As a student, designer Shashank Nimkar became acutely aware of the ceramic waste being produced by the tile manufacturing industry in Uttar Pradesh. When visiting local ceramic producers, he could not ignore the large piles of ceramic rejects littering the towns where the factories were located. This gave rise to a graduation project in 2018, which in turn led to a commercial enterprise. Tatva Earth, launched in 2021 with a grant from the Gujarati government.
At Tatva Earth, waste is taken from local producers, and recycled into new ceramic products, including bowls, mugs and plates. The waste ceramic is ground down into a fine powder, and mixed with a patented clay composition which acts as a binder. Excess water and air pockets are then removed from the mixture. The ceramic waste is already glazed, and this gives the new products an extra level of strength, as the particles of glaze bind with the clay during the process.
Recently, Tatva Earth has begun producing custom tiles using the same process. This new line in mosaic tiles is currently being used for a residential project in Surat.
