Oman government takes measures to protect local ceramic tile production

The government of the Sultanate of Oman has introduced anti-dumping duties on all ceramic or porcelain tiles originating or being exported from either China or India.

The new rules came into effect towards the end of May 2025. The Public Authority for Consumer Protection are actively monitoring the implementation of the new duties at all of Oman’s custom ports.

Oman’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MOCIIP) introduced the duties following complaints from local producers that the Gulf’s tile industry is being harmed by the dumping of large quantities of cheap imports from China and India being sold at below-cost prices.

MOCIIP’s Competition and Anti-Monopoly Centre Director General, Ahmed bin Salem al Rasbi, believes that the new duties are necessary to protect the local industry. It is alleged that tiles from China and India are being introduced to the market at unfair prices, creating significant price distortion. Al Rasbi feels that the imposition of anti-dumping duties will strengthen the competitiveness of the Gulf’s tile producers, and lead to improved quality, enhanced production capacity and greater employment opportunities in the region.
