On October 28, the Calvert Library Twin Beaches branch in North Beach, Maryland will hold a dedication ceremony for a new mural made of ceramic tiles.
The mural, which pays tribute to the community’s relationship with Chesapeake Bay, has been designed by Paran Collery, an artist well known for her public art installations around Virginia, Washington D.C. and Maryland.
Created with a focus on inclusivity, the colourful new mural is both visual and tactile, with relief-sculpted surfaces. The mural, titled “The World Is Our Oyster, and the Oyster is Our World” depicts the variety of sea life found in the bay, and highlights the community’s relationship with the sea. An interactive activity pamphlet will be provided to enable visitors to engage more fully with the mural.
The mural covers the library walls on Chesapeake Avenue and 5th Street. A generous grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, along with significant contributions from many other local bodies, have made the project possible. Carrie Willson, the library’s executive director, said this about the mural:
“This mural is more than decoration—it’s a celebration of our environment, our community, and our shared story”
This new installation is another example of how decorative, ceramic tile murals can make a strong, vibrant and enduring impact on community spaces, celebrating shared histories and cultures.
