Motawi Tileworks in Ann Arbor, Michigan have launched a range of custom ceramic tiles to commemorate special occasions such as weddings, business events, and restaurant openings.
Attendees will each take home a small, hand-made ceramic tile illustrated with a design associated with the event. Guests at a wedding, for example, will take home a piece of art as a permanent reminder of the special day: something more enduring that the usual bag of sweets, flower bouquets and flutes of bubbly.
Two types of tiles are offered by Motawi. The polychrome art tile range, as its name suggests, are lively, multi-coloured, hand-glazed tiles displaying an image, motif or pattern. For a restaurant opening, this could be an image of the type of cuisine offered by the establishment, or a picture of diners sat at a table, or the restaurant’s distinctive logo. The alternative relief tile range comprises tiles glazed in tones of a single colour but with sculptural, tactile elements.
Images are generally supplied by the client, and these are then adapted by Motawi into a mould. Tiles are then painted, glazed and fired in the usual way. The versatility of decorative ceramic tiles seems limitless, and in this latest venture, Motavi is attempting to take advantage of the extensive aesthetic possibilities of the medium.
