Classic London hotel’s past honoured in renovation

The Hotel St Paul’s in London has been given a full interior makeover by design firm Holloway Li.

It is one of four hotels Holloway Li will work on in London and the US. A common challenge for designers working on a classic, older building, is how to strike the balance between past and present.

Honouring the past of the Hotel St Paul’s was a key concern of Holloway Li’s redesign. Originally built in the post-war modernist era and now belonging to the Club Quarters chain, the hotel is very much of its time. It exudes that post-war optimism and future-oriented, modernist ethos.

Tiling is an important element of the redesign. The walls of the reception area and the coffee bar are covered in glazed, bottle green tiles displaying semi-circular motifs. The green is not uniform, with varied, subtle shades visible. Attached to the wall behind the bar are three wooden framed art works. Instead of being paintings or pictures, they are arrangements of contrasting tiles in white and terracotta shades, each arranged differently to create abstract art pieces.

The versatility of custom ceramic tiles and porcelain tiles, and their remarkable durability and longevity, is increasingly recognized by designers and architects all over the world. Many renovation projects and new builds feature tiling elements that form a key part of the overall design.
