A church in a small Californian village has installed a new tile mural inspired by traditional Portuguese style.
Artesia, a village in Los Angeles County, has a vibrant, cultural diversity. However, the Portuguese role in the city’s history has
not been forgotten, least of all at the Holy Family Catholic Church, which served as the spiritual home of those immigrant farmers and their descendants.
Seeking a way to honour the church’s founders, Father John Cordero and Father Luis Proença decided on a large mural of printed, Portuguese-style tiles, which would illustrate the church’s mission while referencing the community’s history. Father Luis approached a colleague, designer José García Moreno, who was assigned the task of creating a ceramic tile mural for the Artesia church’s vestibule wall, creating a durable, lasting image pointing to the church’s past and future.
The mural id designed to illustrate Christ’s commands to “make disciples of all nations” and become “fishers of men.” It embodies the mission of the church, while pointing to the diverse nature of the community, where Mexican, Filipino and other ethnic groups now outnumber those of Portuguese origin. Visitors are presented with a living image of swirling, spiral motion, Fish swim toward a representation of the Eucharist, creating an impression of eternal creation and continual growth, as the diverse elements of the community are drawn together by their common faith.
