What is the 3-4-5 rule for tiles?

In tile installation, one of the most important checks is whether the room’s corners are

truly square.

There’s a rule of thumb that is designed specifically for this purpose. It’s known as the 3-4-5 rule, and is commonly used by tile fitting teams to confirm there is a 90-degree angle before proceeding with installation.

This article will explain the principle of the 3-4-5 rule for tiles before discussing how to apply it.

What is the 3-4-5 rule?

The 3-4-5 rule is a practical application of Pythagoras’ theorem (3² + 4² = 5²). This is a calculation that was popularised by Pythagoras, the legendary Greek philosopher, although earlier civilisations are believed to have employed it, too How it works is this. By measuring 3 units along a wall from a corner and 4 units along the corresponding perpendicular wall, the hypotenuse, also known as the diagonal distance, between those two points must equal exactly 5 units to confirm a true right angle.

Any deviation shows that the corner is out of square, and this is something that must be accounted for before tiling begins.

The unit of measurement can be feet, metres, or simply tiles themselves, so long as the ratio of 3:4:5 remains constant.

How to apply the 3-4-5 rule

1. Identify the corner – you should start at the corner of the space where the tile layout will begin.

  1. Measure the first side – from the corner, measure one wall for 3 units, before marking the point.
  2. Measure the second side- now from the same corner, measure 4 units along the adjacent wall and mark that point.
  3. Check the diagonal – then measure the straight-line distance between the two marks. A reading of exactly 5 units confirms the corner is square. Anything other than 5 units requires the layout to be adjusted accordingly.

A fraction of a degree out of square can compound across a space. That makes confirming a 90-degree angle prior to an installation imperative in order to avoid misaligned patterns and widening grout lines. This makes the 3-4-5 rule an essential part of installing stock or custom tiles.
