Decades-old ceramic tile mural wins award

The Milwaukee County Historical Society has given its second annual Public Art Award to a ceramic tile mural installed

way back in 1969-1970.

Its creator, noted designer Edward Cathony, passed away in 2010, but the reward was received by family members at the ceremony held on April 15, 2026, more than half a century after the piece’s creation.

Ceramic tile murals installed in urban spaces are increasingly under threat as buildings are demolished and neighbourhoods redeveloped, and the award-winning piece ‘People Helping People’ is no exception.

The contemporary revival of interest in creating brand new murals on public buildings goes hand-in-hand with a growing awareness of the need for the preservation or restoration of the many striking historical examples of the form, when so many are facing neglect or even destruction.

Commissioned for the building used by the Milwaukee Insurance Company, Cothony’s work was credited for reflecting the styles and attitudes of its time.

Made of highly durable decorative outdoor wall tiles, this large mural can still be seen at its original location on W Michigan Street, and the demolition threatened in 2023 has thus far been avoided. Leading conservationists are advocating for its preservation, and a relocation has been suggested should the building finally face the wrecking ball.
