The Cedars Sinai Marina Hospital, still under construction in Marina-del-Rey, California, has acquired a stunning new mural designed by
a local artist.
Constructed to serve the popular man-made marina, noted for its sailing and paddle-boarding, the new hospital is a much-needed addition to this thriving community. Given the marina’s association with sailing, it is appropriate enough that the artist behind the new mural, Jay Yan, is himself a keen sailor. The new mural covers what would otherwise have been an uninspiring, blank wall.
The mural, designed in a mosaic style using glazed ceramic tiles, links the hospital to the community. Conscious of the potential for damage, he has opted for quality, custom ceramic tiles with sturdy glazing that can withstand the attacks of the Pacific Ocean’s airborne salt and water.
The huge mural, 120ft wide by 16ft tall, has tiles arranged in patterns that never repeat, planned by Yan using computer software. The tiles themselves have been created by Mexican manufacturer, Ceramica Suro, based in Guadalajara. Yan worked closely with one of their pigment specialists during the planning stage. The mural is all about colour, and precision was a must when selecting the gradations of shade and tone to be used.
