This year’s ‘Matter and Shape’ event, held in Paris on March 6, marked the debut of
Italian company Leucos’ innovative modular lighting system ‘Glowtile’.
Working with Milanese design company RedDuo, Leucos have come up with a product that combines ceramic tiling with an effective lighting system.
‘Glowtile’ consists of glazed ceramic tiles, available in two and three colour options of oyster white, mineral grey and chalk blue. The tiles are each fitted with egg-shaped light diffusers made from handblown glass, and set into a ring of anodised aluminium.
The compositional freedom afforded by Glowtile enables designers to install the tiles in a variety of arrangements and combinations. The installer can make choices of colour, tile size and spatial organisation, creating distinct and varied effects from what may seem a relatively limited palette. The tiles can be installed on floors, walls or ceilings, and arranged in staggered lines, patterns or grids.
The ancient hand blowing technique means that none of the glass diffusers are exactly alike. This gives each piece a uniqueness not often found in modular systems which are, by their nature, repetitive.
Leucos, famed for its handblown glass lamps, was founded in 1962 in Romano d’Ezzelino, a city about one hour’s drive from Venice. The company’s work lies within an established local tradition of artisanal glass production.
The versatility of ceramic tiles is making them an increasingly popular choice for designers.
