Africa tile market grows in spite of significant challenges

The growing recognition that ceramic tiles are resilient, attractive and hygienic is making them a prime choice for developers working in

urban construction in sub-Saharan Africa. The rising aspirations of a growing African middle class are also significantly driving the market growth.

The Africa tile market (including ceramic, porcelain and stone-based tiles) was valued in 2025 at USD 14.34 billion, with an estimated growth to USD 14.49 billion in 2026. The market is predicted to grow to USD 15.73 billion by 2034, representing a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 1.03% from 2026 to 2034.

A major problem for such an energy intensive industry is the unreliability and inconsistency of power supply in many African states, causing many manufacturers to rely on expensive diesel generators, significantly impacting production costs. The industry still relies heavily on imports, as local manufacturing ecosystems remain underdeveloped. Nigeria, in 2022, imposed 10-20% import duty on ceramic tiles in an effort to protect the local manufacturers. Furthermore, a lack of a skilled, local workforce adequately trained in tile installation negatively impacts growth.

In spite of these market restraints, the forecast does indicate a steady growth in the industry, as the continent continues to emerge as an important global player.
