Ceramic tiles create focal point at TV star’s mansion

The Big Bang Theory actor Jim Parsons recently took Spanish design influence to a new place – literally. His former Los Feliz mansion has

an outdoor living room, complete with antique furniture, wall art and vases of flowers, which features elegant wall tiles

Los Feliz, an affluent neighbourhood just north of Hollywood, is home to some of the movie industry’s biggest stars. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the region’s Spanish links and the Southern California climate, Spanish Revival is again in vogue as an interior design style.

Decorative outdoor wall tiles are often used sparingly, to create accents in a room which is dominated by plainer, more muted textures and colours. White and beige predominate on the larger areas, but judicious use of custom ceramic tiles on floors and walls can create contrasts to break up the homogeneity of the overall scheme. Natural materials predominate, and the colour scheme should reflect the Spanish landscape.

Working with Steven Johanknecht, co-founder of Commune Design, Parsons created an ideal place for socialising on summer evenings. Ceramic tiles, so characteristic of the Spanish aesthetic, create the room’s focal point. The intricate tile arrangement above the large central fireplace marks the warm heart of the room, drawing the eyes toward the hearth, that most ancient symbol of familial comfort.
