Ceramic tiles used in striking Paris art installation

The effectiveness of ceramic tiling in an artwork is exemplified in an unusual but striking new installation in the Cour Jardin restaurant of the Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris.

Durable, easy to clean, stylish and hygienic, ceramic tiles are a practical and affordable way to cover floors and walls in a public building. The versatility of ceramic tiles, however, goes well beyond considerations of mere utility, and they are increasingly recognized as a powerful artistic medium by contemporary artists, as seen at the Cour Jardin.

Daybed, by Univers Uchronia, consists of a two-tier pedestal and canopy, covered in tiles produced by Dutch brand, Palet. The tiles have red and green colour matched glazes, mirroring the lush greens and deep reds of the geraniums bordering the garden area. The installation’s name is quite literal: on the pedestal sits a daybed, with real bed linen and a matching headboard. The installation is temporary, and will be on display until November 11, 2025.
